Darkest Hour: Europe '44-'45 has been a free modification for Red Orchestra: Ostfront for over 5 years. In this time, the game has received large and regular updates adding new features such as suppression, mantling, in-depth tank combat and player-operated mortars. Since the game's modest arrival on the scene, it broke away as one of the most successful and popular modification to Tripwire Interactive's original game. So successful in fact, it made its way on to Steam as a free-to-play modification and was reported to have accumulated over 10,000 downloads on its first day of release back in 2009.
